One of my main issues with influencers and self-care is that they make it seem as though self-care is only for the wealthy or those with extra money. Self-care only involves you taking care of you. Taking time to pay attention to your needs and making sure that those needs are met is important. Many influencers and wealthy people making it seem as though the only way to take care of yourself is through expensive vacations and spa days. There are numerous ways self-care can be accomplished with minimal funds.
First, let us discuss the most basic form of self-care that is making sure your basic needs are met. We are so stressed and distracted that we fail or forget to take care of our most basic needs. If you are feeling extremely stressed and distracted use this list to ensure you are meeting your needs.
Get the Sleep and Rest You Require
Are you getting enough sleep? Do you know the amount of sleep you require and getting that much? If you have been slacking and lacking on sleep making sleep a priority is important.
Ensure You Are Not Hungry
If you aren’t eating then you aren’t providing yourself with the fuel you need to function. Make sure that you are taking the time to eat at necessary intervals. Eating healthy will be better for your body and mental functioning, but sometimes you have to allow yourself the freedom to eat what you wish in moderation.
Making Sure Your Finances Are Okay
Being stressed out because of your financial situation is a common situation for several households. Financial stress is linked to various health issues including depression, and sleep issues. Getting a hold of your financial situation and setting up weekly sessions will help with the financial stress. Building a budget and using various budgeting apps can help you gain control over your money.
Free and Low Cost Options of Self-Care
Once your basic needs are met there are other ways to focus on self-care that gives you a break from stress, soothes your feelings, and gives you some alone time. Nurture yourself by blocking off time for self-care at least weekly. Self-care can help to fight off depression. It should be a time when you are uninterrupted unless you have scheduled time with a loved one. I polled the women of the planner group “Black Women Who Plan and Create (BWWPC)” for some free to low-cost self-care techniques and here are some of the favorites.
- Getting up early in the morning and drink your coffee
- Do Nothing Weekends
- Reading a Book
- Random Car Drive with a Friend
- Deep Cleaning your House
- Rearranging the Furniture
- Taking a Relaxing Bath
- Taking a Nap
- Drinking Some Hot Tea
- Giving Yourself a Manicure/Pedicure
- Taking Care of Your Hair
- Giving Yourself a Facial
- Indulging in a Hobby
- Playing with a Pet
Of course there are other forms of self-care, but my goal for this post was to talk about the basic forms of self-care and other low-cost options. Self-care doesn’t always have to be expensive and lavish. Some of my best forms of self-care involve waking up in the morning, drinking my coffee, reading a book, and watching the Pupster play. However you choose to take care of yourself just make sure you do it regularly.
